Titles

Sensei

Sensei literally means "born before" and implies that the person has more experience. A more common translation is "teacher". The use of the title in Japan is not restricted to the martial arts. School teachers, or any type of instructor, are often referred to as sensei.

Shihan

Shihan loosely translates to master and is generally reserved for martial arts instructors 5th dan (5th degree black belt) or higher.

Renshi, Kyoshi, and Hanshi

Three titles commonly found in the Japanese martial arts are Renshi, Kyoshi, and Hanshi. These titles are given to dedicated, experienced instructors, typically 5th dan or higher, who have contributed significantly to their organization and martial art. Not all black belts with advanced degrees are granted a title.

Hanshi is the highest of the titles, followed by Kyoshi, then Renshi. Renshi translates to "well-trained instructor." Kyoshi translates to "teacher of teachers" and signifies someone who trains instructors. Hanshi means "model teacher" and is given to persons who are a role model for both students and instructors.
