Providing Affordable Quality Traditional Martial Arts Instruction
Youth Program...
The Youth Program (ages 8-12) is geared primarily towards Karate-Do training. However, Jiu-Jitsu is incorporated into the curriculum to achieve balanced self defense skills. The purpose of the class is to develop self-confidence, physical fitness, self defense and discipline. It should be noted that traditional martial arts training does not create bullies. The confidence-building qualities developed within the child will encourage the student to walk away from confrontations. As with adults, not all children will advance at the same rate. Progress depends on many factors, including, age, physical coordination, mental awareness of detail, and overall interest. An intermediate junior grade system is used to mark progress in the children’s program. Certified belt ranks (yellow, orange, green) are earned by testing at formal examinations held at the end of every month. Incremental rank promotions between certified ranks are indicated by the instructor placing colored stripes on the student’s
belts.
We have found that this incremental system gives the younger student motivation and a more immediate feedback on his or her progress between certified belt ranks. The certified belt ranks are in all ways comparable to the adult requirements and in fact the children may take examinations right along side of the adults.
When a student reaches the age of 12, he or she may train in both the youth and the adult programs, moving back and forth between the two programs as needed. How soon they are ready for the longer and more intense adult program is dependent on the individual child. Any student who reaches the age of 13 will be transferred into the adult class where they may continue their training.
